Becky and Lucas’ Chicago engagement session was the kind of date-day combo we love, fun first, photos second, and everything felt like them.
We kicked things off at Galloping Ghost Arcade in Brookfield, then wrapped up at Brookfield Zoo for a totally different vibe that still felt playful and real.
If you’re planning engagement photos in Chicago (or anywhere around it), this is your reminder that your session does not have to be “walk around a park and smile at each other for two hours.”
Pick a couple places you would actually go on a weekend together, build in a little movement, give yourselves something to do, and suddenly the candids show up on their own.
Galloping Ghost Arcade is a straight-up time warp in the best way. Rows on rows of games, neon glow, and that constant buzz of “one more round” energy.
Becky and Lucas leaned all the way into it, bouncing between cabinets, hyping each other up, and laughing like nobody was watching. That’s the sweet spot for photos, because you’re not performing, you’re just hanging out together.
Also, the lighting in arcades is chef’s kiss for moody, colorful, cinematic engagement photos when you let it be what it is.
After the arcade, we switched gears and headed to Brookfield Zoo. The pace slows down in a good way, more walking, more talking, more little moments that feel effortless.
We grabbed a mix of playful, documentary-style frames while they explored, plus a few cleaner portraits where the backgrounds opened up and everything felt calm and classic.
That combo is what makes a session like this work so well. You get variety without having to force anything.
1) Ask about photo rules before you go.
Both spots are private property, so rules can vary day to day. Brookfield Zoo specifically notes that photos and video are welcome for personal use, and commercial photography requires advance notice and written permission, so it’s worth checking in ahead of time if you’re hiring a photographer.
2) Keep your “must-have shots” list short.
Arcades and zoos are best when you let them breathe. A few goals is perfect, like one game you both love, a quick neon hallway moment, then a relaxed walking set at the zoo.
3) Wear something you can move in.
You’re going to be standing, walking, playing, and probably weaving through people. Comfort matters, and it shows in the photos.
If you’re dreaming up engagement photos in Chicago and want them to feel more like a date than a photoshoot, we’re in. Pick your spots, bring your personality, and we’ll guide the rest.
