This proposal was one of the coolest surprise setups we’ve ever gotten to photograph.
The couple headed to Waypoint in Mishawaka for a VR arcade experience, jumped into a game together, and she thought the big moment was going to be the final level.
Plot twist. The real final boss was waiting in real life.
Proposals that are built around something you both love always hit different.
This one was especially fun because it had a full storyline. They were in the game, focused, laughing, fully in the moment, and totally unaware that the biggest surprise was waiting just outside the headset.
They started by playing a VR game together, which is honestly a perfect way to keep things natural and relaxed.
You’re moving, reacting, and having fun, so the “camera awareness” disappears fast.
As the game wrapped up, he got into position, ready to make the moment happen the second she came back to the real world.
When she took off the headset, she expected the usual post-game laughs.
Instead, she looked up and saw him down on one knee.
That split second of confusion turning into shock and instant joy is exactly why we love surprise proposals. You can’t fake that reaction. It’s pure, real, and it happens fast.
The kind of moment you’ll remember forever, and the kind of moment we love being there to capture.
A VR proposal is such a good move if you want something unique without needing a massive production.
It’s personal, it’s fun, and it creates a natural distraction so the surprise stays a surprise.
Plus, it turns your engagement story into something nobody else can copy-paste. It’s yours.
1) Pick something that feels normal for you two.
If it’s a regular date-night thing, your partner won’t suspect a thing.
2) Plan the timing with the location.
Activities have natural start and end points, so coordinate the “moment” around that transition.
3) Have a simple signal.
A quick text, a nod, or a cue from staff makes it easy to hit the timing without stress.
4) Give them a minute to react.
The best photos are often right after the “yes,” when the adrenaline hits and the hugs start happening.
If you’re planning a surprise proposal and you want it captured in a way that feels real, not staged, we’d love to help.
We’ll help you plan the timing, stay hidden, and make sure the photos tell the story exactly how it felt.
