Natalie and Sam described their wedding in three words: “Best day ever.” After watching their day unfold at Palais Royale, that checks out.
Their Palais Royale wedding was classy without being stiff, emotional without being overdone, and fun in a way that felt real. The guest count was intimate, the timeline had breathing room, and the whole day felt like it was built around actually enjoying it.
Natalie and Sam loved Palais Royale for the architecture, the colors, and those tall ceilings that make everything feel grand the second you walk in. It has that old-world elegance built in, which means you do not need to over-decorate for it to feel elevated. It already does the heavy lifting.
Their color palette brought in soft and bold at the same time, sage green with pink and dark red. It played perfectly with the warm tones and historic vibe inside the venue.
Sam got ready right at the venue in downtown South Bend, and his “fun topics” list was basically a perfect snapshot of his world. League of Legends, video games, time at Purdue, and ELK. Strong, very on-brand, no filler.
Natalie’s side was equally iconic. Pharmacy-school crew, healthcare talk, and Natalie running off every time she starts drinking. That is the kind of detail that does not show up in the formal “wedding description,” but it absolutely shows up in the energy of the day.
Natalie and Sam chose to do a first look, and it was the right call, especially with Natalie saying she expected to feel nervous. A first look gives you a private moment to breathe, laugh, and settle in before the ceremony energy hits.
They also asked for as much direction as possible during portraits, which we love. You should never feel like you have to “perform” for photos. Our job is to guide you, keep you comfortable, and pull out the real stuff between the prompts.
They had an unplugged ceremony inside Palais Royale, and that always makes the room feel more present. No phones up, no guests leaning into the aisle, just everyone actually watching the moment happen.
They also went non-traditional with a sand ceremony, and they specifically wanted photos of the ceremony itself and the final result. Those little keepsakes matter because they become part of your home later, not just part of your wedding day.
Natalie and Sam planned portraits at the Morris Theatre, which is such a killer downtown South Bend photo spot. The architecture gives you drama without feeling try-hard, and stepping outside the theatre adds variety, especially if you want that “city date night” feel mixed into an elegant wedding day.
Then you come back to Palais Royale and it all ties together, historic, romantic, and classic, with just enough downtown edge.
They had a few specific “must-have” moments for the reception that we were all about. The rings, the sand ceremony result, and a photo on the thrones. Palais Royale has those moments built in, and they make the gallery feel uniquely “Palais” in a way that is instantly recognizable.
They planned two speeches, one from the maid of honor and one from the best man, and the day had that perfect pace where emotional moments and celebration flowed together naturally.
Their first dance song was “All You Need to Know” by Shane Filan, which is such a sweet choice, romantic without being cheesy.
Natalie flagged a complicated family situation with her maternal grandfather and shared that Alzheimer’s and hospital stays were part of what they were navigating. When couples share that with us, it helps us photograph family moments with more care and awareness.
That’s one of the quiet parts of wedding days people don’t always talk about. There is joy, and there can also be heaviness in the background. A good wedding story holds both without making it weird.
If you’re planning a Palais Royale wedding, lean into the venue’s natural architecture first, then layer your color palette on top of it. You do not need to over-style this space for it to feel elevated.
If you get nervous for photos, do a first look and build in extra portrait time. Not to take more photos, but to take the pressure off so the photos feel like you.
If you want the most “Palais Royale” images in your gallery, make time for the thrones and a few wide shots that show off the ceiling and room scale. Those are the photos that instantly set the scene.
And if you’re considering an unplugged ceremony, do it. The room feels different when people are actually present.
