Karli and Dan’s engagement session in St. Joseph, Michigan was the kind of session that just flows.
A little downtown wandering, a little lakeshore scenery, and plenty of time to keep things relaxed and natural while we captured photos that felt like them.
St. Joe is one of our favorite spots for engagement photos because it gives you variety without overcomplicating the plan.
You can get classic downtown textures, quiet side streets, and then pivot to lakefront views for a completely different look in the same session.
We started with a relaxed walk through downtown St. Joseph.
Brick walls, storefronts, and clean lines make for great backdrops, and walking keeps the session from feeling stiff. We stopped when the light looked good, grabbed a few portraits, then kept moving. That pace always helps couples settle in quickly.
Then we made our way toward the lake for the second half of the session.
Lake Michigan views always add depth and openness to a gallery. The shoreline and horizon keep the backgrounds clean and timeless, while the breeze and movement make everything feel natural. We captured a mix of scenic wide shots and close-up portraits to round out their session.
1) Wear shoes you can walk in.
St. Joe sessions are best when we can move between downtown and the lakefront comfortably.
2) Plan for wind by the water.
It’s part of the lakeshore vibe, and it can look amazing in photos.
3) Keep it simple.
You don’t need a bunch of props here. Great light and a good walk together does the trick.
If you want engagement photos that feel relaxed, scenic, and true to you, St. Joseph is a perfect place for it.
We’ll help plan the flow, keep it comfortable, and capture a gallery that feels like a real day together.
