You can find a thousand photographers online. The hard part is finding the one who will show up calm, prepared, and fully in your corner.
If you’re planning a wedding in South Bend, Notre Dame, Chicago, or Southwest Michigan, this is the straight-up guide to choosing a wedding photographer who doesn’t just take pretty photos, but actually gives a damn about your day.
Before you read anything else, here’s the fast filter:
If a photographer misses two or more of those, keep looking.
Wedding photography style is more than “light and airy” vs “moody.” It’s how a photographer sees moments, how they use light, and how consistent the final work looks.
Your job: decide what you want your wedding photos to feel like.
A few common styles you’ll see:

How to figure it out fast:
Make a small Pinterest board and save 20–30 images. Then look for patterns. Are you saving emotion-forward candids, or more posed editorial portraits? That pattern is your style.
Pro tip: Use Pinterest for inspiration, not a shot list. Your wedding will have its own energy.
Your photographer is the vendor who’s with you the most. If they stress you out, you’ll see it in your faces.
When you’re researching:
Ask yourself: “Do I feel relaxed after reading this, or do I feel sold to?”
You want someone who can give direction when needed, then disappear into the background when the real stuff happens.
Anyone can post 20 bangers. What you want is consistency.
What to check:
If their portfolio looks amazing but every image is golden hour outdoors, you still don’t know how they handle the hard parts.
This is the part nobody wants to think about, but it’s the reason pros cost what they cost.
Ask:
If any of those answers are vague, that’s your sign. We also have our 20 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer Guide.
When you reach out, make it easy for them to help you.
Send:
This also helps you see how responsive and helpful they are before money is ever involved.
Keep it simple. These will tell you almost everything:
About the day
About the images
About logistics
Then ask the real one:
“If we’re anxious or overwhelmed on the wedding day, how do you handle that?”
Their answer will tell you if they’re your person.
If you want the short version
Pick the photographer whose work you love, whose presence feels easy, and whose plan is rock solid when life gets weird.
Because your photos should feel like the day felt, not like a styled shoot you had to survive.

How far in advance should we book a wedding photographer?
Most couples book 9–18 months out, sometimes earlier for peak Saturdays. (We have been booking up to 24 mouths out!)
How many hours of coverage do we need?
Most weddings land in the 8–10 hour range. There’s a lot of factors but being able to enjoy the day, have it all captured without feeling rushed, perfect.
Should we hire a second photographer?
If you have 120+ guests, a tight timeline, or separate getting-ready locations, lots of events, etc. a second shooter helps a lot.
Do we need an engagement session?
Not required, but it’s the fastest way to get comfortable in front of the camera and learn how your photographer directs.
What’s the difference between “editing style” and “shooting style”?
Editing style is color and finish. Shooting style is how they capture moments, lighting choices, directions they give, and work through a full wedding day.
