So you’re thinking about getting married at Notre Dame. In the Basilica. With that iconic aisle. The kind of ceremony that makes your guests go silent in the best way.
We get it. Notre Dame weddings are unreal.
They’re also different than most “pick a venue and go” weddings, because the ceremony times and campus rules shape the whole experience.
This guide is meant to help you plan your Notre Dame wedding before you’ve booked anything. It’s a mix of practical tips, inspiration, and the stuff couples usually wish they knew earlier.

Notre Dame has eligibility criteria for weddings on campus, especially for the Basilica. In general, couples typically qualify if one of you is a Notre Dame student or alum, a Sacred Heart Parish member, or current full-time faculty or staff who meet the service requirements.
If you’re unsure whether you qualify, check the Basilica’s wedding information and the Campus Ministry wedding reservation info. It will save you a lot of back-and-forth later.
Past Notre Dame couples will tell you horror stories about everyone calling on the first Monday of March and redialing a million times to reserve a date.
That system changed. Notre Dame moved Basilica wedding reservations to an online request process with a rolling two-year window. You review openings online and request possible dates, then Campus Ministry confirms the best available option.
In other words, you do not have to plan your life around one day in March anymore.
Basilica wedding ceremony times are set. Saturdays typically include 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. In peak summer demand, Friday ceremonies can also be offered at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Notre Dame also blocks out home football weekends, plus certain major University event dates.
When you’re in the “dreaming” phase, we recommend picking your top two or three ceremony times and building your venue search around those. It makes your planning feel way less chaotic.
Most couples come in with “Basilica wedding” in their head, but Notre Dame has a few ceremony options depending on your guest count and the vibe you want.
For example, Notre Dame has highlighted options like the Log Chapel for smaller ceremonies, and in some years has also noted additional chapel options for certain dates. The best move is to review the current ceremony spaces and availability through the official wedding reservation info.
If you love Notre Dame but do not need an 800-seat Basilica moment, a smaller chapel can be a really intentional choice.

If you’ve heard “Notre Dame is busy,” that is an understatement.
Here’s what matters most:
Home football weekends are a no-go for on-campus weddings, and they can affect hotel availability and pricing even near campus on nearby weekends.
Time of year changes everything. Not just weather, but daylight, guest comfort, and how easy it is to move around campus.
South Bend can be sunny, icy, windy, humid, or all of the above. Planning for flexibility is not pessimism. It is wisdom.
A lot of couples love the idea of staying on campus for everything. Ceremony, reception, hotel, after party, and brunch. Easy for guests, especially out-of-towners.
On-campus options often include Notre Dame hospitality venues like the Morris Inn, including the Smith Ballroom.
Off-campus options can be incredible too, especially if you want a different vibe or a specific capacity. Some couples do Basilica at Notre Dame, then head into downtown South Bend, Mishawaka, Granger, or even back toward Southwest Michigan depending on their guest list and priorities.
The key is this: if you do ceremony on campus and reception off-site, plan guest transportation intentionally. It will make your day feel smoother for everyone.
Notre Dame pulls guests from everywhere, so lodging and convenience matter a lot.
A few ideas that tend to work well:
Reserve a room block early if your date is anywhere near a busy campus weekend
Consider an on-campus hotel option like the Morris Inn if it fits your plans and budget
If you’re off-site, pick a hotel that makes transportation easy for guests
The goal is simple: fewer logistics for your guests means more energy on the dance floor.
Yes, we love the Golden Dome. Yes, Touchdown Jesus is iconic. Yes, the Grotto is beautiful.
But our favorite Notre Dame photos happen when couples choose locations that actually mean something to them.
Maybe that’s the spots you hung out between classes. Maybe it’s a favorite building. Maybe it’s a quick stop for a drink, or an arcade run in wedding attire because that is your personality and you refuse to be boring.
Also, if you’re dreaming about any special access experiences, like certain stadium photo opportunities, that is typically something couples coordinate through Notre Dame’s venue and hospitality channels. Just ask early so it’s not a last-minute scramble.

Notre Dame has its own flow. Fixed ceremony times, campus restrictions, crowded weekends, and a lot of moving parts.
When your vendor team has experience at Notre Dame, everything gets easier. Planning conversations are faster, expectations are clearer, and you avoid the common “Oh, we didn’t know that was a thing” surprises.
Here’s a simple pre-booking checklist that saves couples a ton of stress:
Confirm you qualify for a Notre Dame ceremony location
Pick your top ceremony time options (and a backup plan)
Check football weekend and major event conflicts
Decide if you want reception on campus or off-site
Think through guest lodging and transportation early
Start a shortlist of vendors who know Notre Dame weddings
If you’re still in the “we love Notre Dame but haven’t booked yet” phase, that’s a great time to reach out.
We can help you think through what ceremony time fits your vibe, what reception options make sense, and what details usually matter most for a smooth Notre Dame wedding weekend.
