Some weddings feel like a weekend getaway that just happens to include a ceremony. This Michigan Maritime Museum wedding felt exactly like that. Meghan and John built a day that felt personal, guest-forward, and genuinely fun. South Haven already meant “home” for their families, so it made sense to celebrate on the water.
They toured a lot of places before landing on this venue. Nothing matched their style until the Michigan Maritime Museum clicked. The views, the history, and the channel breeze sealed the deal. Plus, it sat right on the walk back from their favorite downtown spots.
Meghan got ready at an Airb&b in South Haven. Her crew showed up with big excitement and even bigger mystery energy. They planned her bachelorette party like a surprise mission, including flights she did not book. Meanwhile, Meghan kept talking about dogs, because of course she did.
Some details carried extra meaning that day. Meghan’s jeweler created a necklace using her late mother Rosie’s engagement ring. She also gathered keepsakes that reminded her of Rosie. Then, she saved a seat for her mom at the wedding. Those touches brought her into the day in a real way.
John’s crew had their own vibe, too. They could talk fantasy football forever. They also kept the energy light, which helped balance a packed timeline.
Meghan and John chose a first look, and they wanted as much direction as possible. That combo is ideal for couples who love portraits but still want them to feel real. So, we kept things moving, gave clear prompts, and let their natural chemistry do the rest.
Then came the surprise. Meghan planned a boat moment as a playful payback for John’s prank-loving reputation. In other words, he turned around expecting one thing. Instead, she pulled up like, “Surprise, I’m on a boat.” It was dramatic, hilarious, and honestly iconic.
They also included their dog Cheese for photos beforehand. Dogs cannot attend the venue, but they still made him part of the story.
Their ceremony leaned nontraditional in the best way. Loved ones shared readings that felt personal, not performative. Bryan Rozum, John’s best friend, officiated. The setting held that calm lake energy, with the museum and channel as the backdrop.
They also took a moment during the ceremony to look out at their guests. That pause mattered. It let them see the love in the room and lock it into memory.
Meghan described the design as “Coastal Grandmother Chic.” Think Lake Michigan blues, silver, and white, with chinoiserie jars and hydrangeas. Then add nautical ties, warm lighting, and a little preppy spice. The result felt elevated, but still relaxed.
They also packed the day with personal touches. They wrote handwritten notes to each guest. Everyone traveled at least two hours, so they wanted each person to feel seen. They included an audio guestbook, which they will treasure forever. They even celebrated a family friend’s birthday on wedding day.
The reception began in the gallery, and they flowed straight into the first dance. Their song was “Imagine” by Ben Platt. Then dinner opened, toasts followed, and family dances kept the momentum going. After that, the dance floor turned into exactly what Meghan dreamed of.
They brought in LED glasses, rings, and foam sticks. The energy stayed effortless, and the party stayed packed. Later, John’s favorite moment showed up in the perfect way. They ended the night with their go-to karaoke duet, “Shallow.” That finale felt like them.
They also carved out a boat ride for just the two of them. John felt wiped after photos and almost skipped it. Then they did it anyway, and it became one of Meghan’s favorites. That little pocket of quiet time mattered.
Their biggest advice is simple. Build a timeline early, but treat it like a guideline, not a prison. Also, do a first look, because the day moves fast. Then add more time than you think for getting ready. Finally, do not forget to sleep, because adrenaline only carries you so far.
Most of all, soak it all in. This Michigan Maritime Museum wedding proved how quickly it flies.
