Lauren and Max’s session in Lincoln Park started like a normal, relaxed Chicago portrait session.
But then Lauren pulled out a chalkboard, Max read it, and the whole vibe instantly changed in the best way. He was going to be a daddy.
Lincoln Park is such a great location for sessions like this because it gives you a little bit of everything.
Natural scenery, walkable paths, and a calm feel even though you’re right in the city. It’s a perfect spot for photos that feel timeless, and it’s also a perfect spot for a surprise like this because it doesn’t feel staged.
Lauren had the whole surprise planned, and we were there to help it unfold smoothly.
We started with a few “normal” portraits first so Max had no reason to suspect anything. Then Lauren brought out the chalkboard and handed it to him.
The second he read the message, you could see it hit him. That pause, that smile, that “wait… are you serious?” moment. Those reactions are the stuff you can’t fake, and it’s exactly why surprise sessions are so dang special.
We love proposal sessions for this reason, and baby announcement surprises hit the same way.
It’s pure emotion. Excitement, shock, happy tears, laughter, and that instant shift into “our life is about to change.”
After the reveal, we gave them a little space to soak it in, then eased back into portraits with the kind of joy that only comes from a moment like that.
1) Start with normal photos first.
It helps the surprise feel natural and keeps your partner from catching on.
2) Keep the reveal simple.
A chalkboard, a note, a tiny pair of shoes, anything meaningful works. The reaction is the star.
3) Build in a few minutes after the reveal.
Let them react, hug, breathe, and take it in. Those moments matter.
4) Choose a location that feels like you.
Lincoln Park was perfect because it felt relaxed, scenic, and true to them.
If you’re planning a proposal, baby announcement, or any surprise moment and you want it captured in a way that feels real, we’d love to help.
We’ll help you plan the timing, keep it smooth, and make sure the photos tell the story exactly how it felt.
