Why Kal-Haven Outpost Was The Perfect Fit

Samantha was obsessed with the central campfire between the family cabins, and honestly, same. It creates this natural gathering point where everyone keeps circling back throughout the night. It makes the whole weekend feel connected.

Their plan was simple. Let nature be the backdrop, bring in a few green accents, an autumn-toned suit that fit the season perfectly, and a wildflower bouquet that felt right at home out there.

A Short Hike To A Lake Overlook Ceremony

For the ceremony, they chose Wau-Ke-Na at the W. E. Smith Preserve North Tract in Fennville, Michigan. Guests made a short hike to a lake overlook, then gathered in a semicircle around them.

No rows. No aisle pressure. Just everyone standing close, with nature doing the heavy lifting in the background. It was short and sweet, which is exactly what they wanted.

Samantha officiated the ceremony herself, which made the whole thing feel even more personal. It was one of those moments where you can tell the day is built around meaning, not expectations.

Beach Plans And Keeping Portraits Easy

They were debating adding in a pebble beach nearby, and Pilgrim Haven Natural Area was also on their radar. If you’re planning something similar, this is one of our favorite ways to think about it.

Back at Kal-Haven Outpost, dinner was pizza. Which is elite wedding food when you want the vibe to feel casual and happy. No one’s pretending to be fancy. Everyone’s just enjoying themselves.

And instead of a traditional reception with a dance floor, they turned the evening into what they actually wanted. A board game night, beers by the fire, a s’mores station, and even the possibility of a D&D one shot floating around.

Andrew’s sister making Reese’s s’mores was mentioned, and that alone makes this wedding iconic.

Golden Hour, Campground Edition

They also wanted to sneak off for golden hour photos around the campground during dinner, and we love that plan. It’s low stress, it doesn’t take long, and it gives you a quiet pocket of time together before the night leans all the way into campfire mode.

That’s the beauty of an intimate guest count. You can step away for a few minutes without feeling like you’re missing your entire wedding.

One of the sweetest parts of their questionnaire was how they talked about their people. Their best friends are their second family, and they wanted fun “sibling” style photos with the crew that’s been there through everything.
