When you imagine a wedding that’s equal parts heartfelt, wildly fun, and completely them, Melanie and Nicholas’ big day at Potawatomi Zoo instantly comes to mind. With a ceremony shaded by trees, a reception near the carousel, and enough animals, yard games, and train rides to make even the non-dancers smile, this was anything but a traditional wedding and that’s exactly what made it magical.
Forget stiff traditions. Melanie and Nicholas made their ceremony all their own with a few beautifully unique touches. Instead of bridesmaids, Melanie’s four siblings stood along the aisle and each added a flower to her bouquet as she walked by. And instead of a unity candle or sand, they opted for a tree potting ceremony, symbolizing the roots they’re growing together.
And let’s not forget their first look sweet, emotional, and just the moment they needed to soak it all in before the “I Do.”
This venue wasn’t just a pretty backdrop it was a whole experience. The zoo offered something for everyone: a scenic outdoor ceremony, a train ride for the bridal party, unlimited carousel rides for guests after dinner, and a fun picnic grove that let people wander, mingle, and actually enjoy being outside.
Melanie and Nicholas knew they weren’t big dancers, so they leaned into the joy of just being with their people. That decision made the day feel even more intentional and relaxed.
Their reception kicked off with first dances and then headed right into a cake-cutting with a twist guests voted on who got to smash cake in the other’s face (don’t worry, it was all in good fun).
And just when guests thought the fun was winding down, Melanie’s siblings surprised the newlyweds with a secret “gift ceremony” by the carousel, followed by a whimsical streamer send-off and s’mores under the stars.
Melanie and Nicholas brought themselves into every little detail. From handmade invitations to their dusty blue and burgundy color palette, and even their first dance (set to nerdy music they both love), the whole day was unapologetically them.
And even when the day included unpredictable elements (like awkwardness in front of the camera or unknown vendors), they rolled with it like pros—and we were there to make it all feel easy and natural.
“We’re both incredibly awkward, especially in front of a camera—please help!”
(Spoiler alert: we totally did.)
Their advice? Don’t stress about being traditional. Let the day reflect who you are. Do things your way—whether that means cake-smashing, train-riding, or skipping the bouquet toss entirely.
