If you’ve ever fallen in love with a place on a random road trip, then you already get why Melissa and Dan chose Journeyman Distillery in Three Oaks.
They stopped here early on in their relationship, loved it instantly, and kept coming back whenever they were in the area. Fast forward a decade of life together, and it felt pretty perfect to celebrate their wedding day somewhere that already had a whole history baked into it. Bonus points, Journeyman’s spirits are literally staples in their house, so the venue was not just pretty, it was personal.
And that vibe carried through the whole day. It was rustic, warm, simple in the best way, and full of those “this is so them” details.
Not just because Dan got to see Melissa, or because they finally got a quiet breath together, but because they used that time to share vows. They’ve been together for ten years and had already weathered plenty of life side-by-side. They even said it always felt like they were basically married already.
Still, something about that day snapped everything into place in a new way. The words they shared privately became the emotional anchor for everything that followed.
She didn’t walk in with a rigid checklist, she tried on a few places, learned what she liked, and then made a last-minute decision to pop into a boutique that initially felt “too fancy.” Plot twist, it was the right move. The dress was off-the-rack, the first one she tried on there, with a sweetheart neckline, and that was it.
Sometimes “the one” is not a dramatic movie moment. Sometimes it’s just your brain and body going, “Yep. This is it.”
They kept decor simple and rustic to fit the distillery, with a soft nod toward elegance. Melissa loves purple, and the whole design direction took cues from the venue itself.
They also included heartfelt remembrance of their dads, which added a layer of depth to the day without shifting the tone away from celebration. It felt like love, honor, and joy could all exist in the same room, because they can.
For Melissa and Dan, music is not background noise. It’s woven into their relationship. A lot of their ceremony and entrance music reflected Dan’s interest in gaming, which made it feel uniquely theirs, not just “wedding playlist default.” Their first dance was also intentionally different, and in their words, very much “Dan and us together.”
That’s the sweet spot. Traditions when you want them, personality everywhere you can.
The flower girl energy. Kids being kids, including the girls playing in Melissa’s dress. Quiet conversations. The second mom who walked Melissa down the aisle. The way the day held both tender and hilarious moments without trying too hard.
Also, we have to say it, the outdoor portraits with falling leaves were unreal. Those are the photos that feel like you can hear the crisp air and the laughter in the background.
Melissa also said something we hear from a lot of couples afterward: the only thing she wished she’d done differently was spending a little more time talking with guests who weren’t near the dance floor. Which is honestly a sign of a good party, because when the dance floor is pulling you in, it’s hard to leave.
Melissa was especially happy her mom was taken care of, and even got out on the dance floor. And their biggest surprise ended up being something simple but huge, how much closer they felt instantly after the ceremony, even after ten years together.
That’s what a wedding day can do. It’s not that it changes your relationship overnight, it’s that it puts a spotlight on everything you already are together, then gives you a new memory to carry forward.
If you’re choosing a venue with multiple levels, unique layouts, or accessibility needs, build in a little extra time and support. A coordinator or point person can make setup, transitions, and cleanup so much smoother, and it frees you up to actually be present.
