Jayme and Steve’s Kalamazoo engagement session was the perfect mix of laid-back and totally them.
We started with a walk around town for that easy, date-night vibe, then they stopped into their local gaming shop and played a round of Magic. It was personal, fun, and honestly a great reminder that the best sessions are the ones that feel like real life.
Kalamazoo is a great spot for engagement photos because it gives you variety without feeling like you’re trying to do a million things.
Walkable streets, textures, cool little pockets of light, and plenty of spots where we can grab clean portraits while still keeping the whole session relaxed.
For Jayme and Steve, the goal was simple. Make it feel like a date. Keep it natural. Add something personal that actually represents who they are together.
We kicked things off with a casual stroll, stopping whenever we found good light or a backdrop that fit their vibe.
Walking sessions always work because you’re not stuck thinking about “what do I do with my hands?” You’re just moving, talking, laughing, and the candid moments show up naturally.
Jayme and Steve were comfortable right away, which made the portraits feel effortless and real.
Then we took a quick detour into their local gaming shop for a game of Magic, and this part was such a vibe.
It’s one of our favorite things when couples build their session around something they actually do together. It instantly relaxes you, gives your hands something to do, and pulls out those genuine expressions you can’t fake.
The photos from this part of the session felt like a little snapshot of their real life together. The laughs, the focus, the playful competitiveness, all of it.
If you’re even a little nervous about engagement photos, adding an activity is the easiest way to make it feel natural.
Coffee date, arcade, record store, bookstore, brewery, gaming shop, whatever fits you. You get photos that feel personal and unique, and the session feels like a fun hangout instead of a photoshoot.
1) Pick one walking area and one “you” activity.
That combo gives you variety without feeling rushed.
2) Keep it natural.
The best activities are things you’d actually do on a normal date. That’s what makes the photos feel real.
3) Don’t worry about perfection.
The candid moments while you’re playing, laughing, and reacting are usually the favorites.
If you want engagement photos that feel relaxed, fun, and personal, we’re all in.
Tell us what you love doing together and we’ll help you build a session that feels like a date, not a checklist.
