Andrea and Shane’s wedding day had one clear mission. Throw a big party with their favorite people, in a space that already felt like them.
And honestly, Journeyman Distillery in Three Oaks was the perfect match for that. Beautiful wood, huge windows, great cocktails, and the kind of vibe that feels elevated without feeling stiff.
This venue choice started the way a lot of good decisions do. Curiosity, a quick stop, and an immediate “yep, this is it.”
During the pandemic, instead of baking bread, Andrea and Shane were experimenting with cocktails. Then Journeyman’s “Corsets and Whips” popped into Andrea’s Google feed one morning, and they made a point to swing by on a drive to Chicago.
One visit was all it took. Great drinks. A gorgeous event space. Sold.
Andrea found her dress off the rack at Bombshell Bridal Boutique in Shelby Township, Michigan, then made it even more “her” with custom sleeves.
She knew what she wanted going in. Lace and sleeves, but no massive ballgown energy. This one hit the sweet spot. The right color, lace that wasn’t fussy or sparkly, and a design that could easily take the sleeve upgrade.
She slept on it to be for-sure-for-sure, then went back the next day and made it official.
Andrea’s big worry was ugly crying her way through the ceremony. Shane’s main concern was simpler and honestly iconic.
He wanted to make sure he got pizza at the end of the reception.
Different stress styles. Same team.
Journeyman is one of those venues that gives you a blank slate, but it’s a blank slate that already looks incredible. The wood, the windows, the light. It does a lot of the heavy lifting.
So instead of over-decorating, Andrea and Shane leaned into personality. Legos on the tables (thanks to some wonderfully enabling Lego nerd friends) and multicolored florals that made everything feel playful and bright without losing the vibe.
Sugarfield Flowers had done multicolored arrangements at Journeyman before, so once that idea clicked, the rest of the design basically fell into place.
Andrea and Shane both said the officiant absolutely crushed it. Like, the kind of ceremony that feels personal, polished, and actually holds the room.
And then the universe decided to add a dramatic sound effect.
There was a thunderclap right when they said “I do.”
Not planned. Not expected. Completely unforgettable.
One of the biggest surprises of the day came from the best man speech. He brought videos, and it caught them totally off guard in the best way.
Between that, the maid of honor speech, and the overall energy of the room, the reception turned into exactly what they wanted. A loud, joyful, full-body celebration with their people.
Their favorite part of the day ended up being a three-way tie: an amazing officiant, killer speeches, and a dance floor that stayed alive all night.
Andrea and Shane were blown away by how many people stayed all the way to the end for the “Piano Man” sing-along. That’s the sign of a real one.
And one of the moments they’ll never forget was the two of them rocking out to “Sponge” by themselves because apparently nobody else knew it.
Which honestly feels extremely on-brand. A big party, but still those little “it’s just us” pockets that hit you right in the chest.
One thing they loved was seeing photos from earlier in the day pop up on the DJ’s screen during the reception. It’s a small touch that makes the whole night feel even more connected.
Also, they fully said we went above and beyond during the ceremony to make sure they had what they needed.
Including donuts. Apparently yes. Donuts were acquired.
After the wedding, they took a few days in Toronto, which happened to line up with the city’s first annual cocktail week.
If you’re going to pick a honeymoon coincidence, that’s a solid one.
If you’re planning a wedding at a venue like Journeyman, lean into what the space already gives you. The wood, the windows, the light, the atmosphere. Then add personality with a few intentional details that feel like you.
It photographs beautifully, it feels more authentic, and you don’t end up spending your whole budget trying to “transform” a space that already looks incredible.
