Mary Liz and Lexi’s Trigger Chicago wedding was the kind of day that felt intentionally them from start to finish. Not the “copy + paste wedding template,” not a ballroom vibe, and definitely not a “do it because you’re supposed to” kind of celebration. This was a small guest count on purpose, a space that let them customize everything, and a room full of people who came ready to celebrate hard.
They chose Trigger Chicago because it gave them freedom. No preferred vendor list, no forced packages, no weird restrictions. Just a unique space that could be shaped around what they cared about most, and a built-in excuse to keep the guest list tight in the best way.
Mary Liz found her dress at Weddings 826, designed by Madi Lane. She went in without a strict vision and ended up finding a gown that felt like her pretty quickly, which is honestly the dream. There was a little drama with the dress not arriving exactly like the sample, but it still turned into a “yep, this is it” moment.
Lexi’s look had its own layer of meaning too, including a custom shirt and alterations handled through Uncommon Closet, which fit right into the way they approached the whole day: personal, intentional, and not afraid to do things their way.
Mary Liz’s biggest anxiety leading up to the wedding was the universal “did we forget something?” feeling, plus wanting to stay present and not spiral into stress-brain. Then the day came and her biggest surprise was simple: nothing went wrong.
Lexi’s biggest surprise was how fast it all flew by, which tracks because once they were in it, it was all gas and no brakes.
They both had their eyes on the first look as a major moment. Mary Liz was most excited for it, and Lexi ended up calling it her favorite part of the day too. That quiet pause together hits different, especially when the rest of the day is about to turn into a blur.
Mary Liz’s favorite part was during the ceremony, looking out at their people and feeling that wall of love coming back at them. You can plan decor and playlists all day, but that’s the stuff that actually sticks.
The wedding inspiration came from salvaged pieces from their uncles, which naturally built this vintage industrial vibe with actual meaning behind it. It wasn’t “industrial because Pinterest said so.” It was industrial because their family history and keepsakes literally helped shape the space.
They leaned into fall colors because they love fall, and they used Pinterest plus their florist to pull it all together. The end result felt warm, textured, and a little gritty in the coolest way.
This day had so many personal touches, it’s almost easier to list what wasn’t meaningful.
Lexi wore her grandpa’s wedding band. Mary Liz had her great grandma’s handkerchief. They had programs and keepsakes tied to a late uncle, bottles used as vases from another late uncle, and a vintage cash register that was an absolute showpiece.
Then you add the fun stuff that made the whole room come alive: a sing-a-long that everyone actually committed to, an emo hour moment that probably healed something in half the crowd, and a RuPaul song for their walk-in that set the tone immediately.
Also, Mary Liz’s mom pulled off a Disney World surprise, which was such a perfectly on-brand plot twist considering their honeymoon.
They said the moment that will stick with them forever is the last song and dance of the night, with everyone on the dance floor. That’s the goal right there. A room full of your favorite humans circling in close, zero phones in the air, and that feeling of “this is our whole world in one place.”
By the end of the night (and the next day), both of them felt like they wanted to do it all over again every year. That’s the best review a wedding can get.
If you want your day to feel natural, build it around what you actually care about. Mary Liz and Lexi didn’t do a ballroom because they’re not ballroom people. They kept the guest count low because they wanted it intimate. They prioritized the vibe and the freedom to choose vendors based on gut feeling and price, not tradition.
If something matters to you, make it happen, even if it’s not what someone else pictured. They said it best: don’t do anything you don’t want to do.
