Stephanie and Reece’s Lawton wedding was the kind of day that felt like you were stepping right into someone’s real life, not a staged version of it.
They built a wedding that was completely “them.” Colorful, outdoorsy, a little goofy, and full of heart. It was DIY in the best way, with so many handmade choices that made the whole day feel personal without trying too hard.
The reception was on family property, which made the decision pretty easy. Add in the fact that the farm where their vegetables came from was literally right next door and it was a win-win.
Their ceremony location had its own emotional connection too. The Peterson property ties back to the Peterson Classic bowling tournament, which Stephanie and her dad had bowled in years ago. That detail alone tells you exactly how much meaning they packed into this day.
Stephanie went into dress shopping with an open mind. She just knew she did not want something heavy since it was an outdoor summer wedding.
After three different shops and a ton of try-ons, she found the one at Bellasposa in Orland Park, Illinois. The second she put it on, she knew. That’s always the best kind of “this is it.”
If you have ever DIY’d anything for a wedding, you already know the truth. It takes forever, and somehow you are still sprinting at the end.
They planned and collected decor for two years, and it still felt like it came down to the wire. They laughed about it later because it was chaotic, but it was also so worth it. The day came together exactly how they wanted, and it felt like their personalities were baked into every corner.
Stephanie was most excited for their vows. Reece was most excited for the first look.
And then there was that moment at the altar when they finally held hands, locked eyes, and both felt the same thing. We made it. Those are the moments that hit harder than any “perfect” timeline ever could.
They also had a friend officiate, which they both called one of the best decisions they made. It instantly made the ceremony feel even more intimate, like everyone there was part of the story instead of just watching it.
This wedding had some all-time real-life moments.
Blink licking his own wiener during the ceremony is one of those things you cannot plan, and you also cannot forget. Then someone dropped the wedding cake two minutes after they cut it, and yes, they still ate it. Respect.
Reece also made Stephanie a video to watch while she was getting ready, which totally caught her off guard in the best way. That one hit.
Instead of a guest book, they had everyone sign a guitar that they can hang in their home. That is such a solid move if you want something meaningful that you will actually keep out, not stash in a drawer.
They also created a memories corner filled with items from loved ones who have passed, not just photos. It gave their families a place to pause, remember, and feel that connection throughout the night.
Stephanie’s decor style was basically “yard sale and antique mall treasure hunt,” and it worked so well with their outdoor wildflower vibe. They even recycled bottles for centerpieces for two years, which is commitment on a whole different level.
One of Stephanie’s favorite details was the “salad wall.” Not a champagne wall. A salad wall. All the vegetables came from right next door, and the flowers were locally grown by a friend with a small flower farm. They picked them themselves the day before.
Their goal was simple. Throw a big party with their friends and family that they also just happened to get married at.
That energy carried all night. Between the dance floor, the speeches, the music performances, and the general “open mic/karaoke could absolutely happen later” vibe, it was the kind of reception where you look around and realize every person in the room is fully themselves.
By the end of the night, Stephanie and Reece’s review was basically, “It went way too fast, it was perfectly imperfect, and we wouldn’t change a thing.”
DIY weddings can be amazing, but they are usually not cheaper. They are just more work.
If you want the DIY route, consider hiring a planner or coordinator so you can actually enjoy what you built. Also, pick a few “must DIY” things that matter most to you, then let the rest be easy. Your future self will thank you.
