Shelby and Evan are the kind of couple who make you feel like you’ve known them for years within about five minutes.
They met back in 2018, had one mutual acquaintance, and somehow it all just clicked. They did the long-distance thing for a bit, got pulled back together during the pandemic, bought a house in 2021, and then Evan proposed in June on a trip that was basically tailor-made for Shelby.
She loves national parks, so Evan popped the question while they were out doing what she loves most. Also, apparently Evan is terrible with secrets, which makes the whole proposal even funnier because he still managed to pull it off.
These two are big on shared experiences. They’ve got a container where they keep little things from their life together, they love movies, they play video games like It Takes Two and Mario, and they live near the Indiana Dunes. They’ve also got two cats named Bean and Bagel, which is honestly perfect.
So when they chose Shadowland for their wedding day, it made total sense. It’s iconic, it’s fun, and it has that classic lakeshore charm that feels equal parts romantic and “let’s throw the best party ever.”
We started the day with Shelby at their Airbnb in Benton Harbor, where things were calm but excited. The kind of energy where everyone’s laughing, but you can tell the emotions are sitting right under the surface.
Evan and the guys finished getting ready at Shadowland, and if you know anything about Evan at this point, you know he was probably buzzing with anticipation and trying not to spoil anything.
Shelby wanted a first look with her dad, and those moments always land hard in the best way. Quiet, emotional, and one of those times where everything slows down for a second.
Then Shelby and Evan had their first look outside Shadowland, and yep, it was the real deal. Big smiles, a little disbelief, and that “holy crap, we’re actually doing this” energy.
After the first look, we rolled right into couple portraits and wedding party photos in the outdoor spaces around the venue.
Shadowland has so much personality on its own that you don’t have to overthink it. A couple that’s this connected, plus a venue this iconic, and you’re basically set.
We knocked out immediate family photos by sides, then grabbed a few extended family groupings afterward so nobody felt rushed.
This is also where having a solid flow matters. When you keep it moving but still keep it chill, family photos stop feeling like a chore and start feeling like part of the story.
One of our favorite moments of the day was giving Shelby and Evan a quiet second to walk into the reception space and take it all in before guests filled it up.
Those reactions are always the most honest. Just the two of them, realizing “this is ours.”
Their ceremony took place outside, which is such a vibe at Shadowland. Lake Michigan nearby, the venue as the backdrop, and all their people gathered in one place.
It felt classic and laid-back at the same time. Exactly the kind of setting that fits Shelby and Evan.
Right after the ceremony, they signed their marriage license at the carousel, then we jumped into carousel photos and guest photos during cocktail hour.
Shadowland gives you built-in fun, and Shelby and Evan leaned into it hard.
Also, they had a LEGO guestbook situation happening, which was such a perfect “this is us” touch. People were genuinely excited about it, which is how you know you nailed a guest experience idea.
Shelby and Evan warned us ahead of time that they love dancing. They were not kidding.
After entrances and toasts, dinner rolled through, then it was straight into dances:
Shelby and Evan’s first dance
Mother and son dance
Father and daughter dance
Then came the table dash, which is always chaos in the best way. Shelby and Evan sprint table to table saying hi and grabbing photos fast. It’s the best way to make sure you actually get moments with everyone without spending your whole night doing a slow lap.
And after that, the dance floor stayed packed.
Later in the evening, we snuck Shelby and Evan out for sunset photos on the hill. That little break in the middle of the party is everything. You get to breathe, reset, and get those golden-hour portraits without missing the whole reception.
Then they had guests surround them with phone flashes, which looked insanely cool and felt like a giant hype-circle from their favorite people.
If you’re getting married at Shadowland and you love the idea of fun photos without leaving the venue, build your timeline around the experiences already there.
Carousel photos, guest interactions during cocktail hour, a quick sunset break, and a table dash are all high-impact moments that keep the day moving and keep the energy up.
It’s not about adding more things. It’s about picking the right things.
